My Exchange at Tsinghua University

I learned about the exchange programme through friends and found out more about it through the UOA website, followed by information sessions run by 360 International. These resources were instrumental in guiding me through the application process and setting realistic expectations for my semester abroad.

Arriving at Tsinghua University in Beijing was a blend of exhilaration and awe. The sheer scale of the campus and the bustling vibrancy of the city immediately captivated me. Beijing’s mix of modernity with rich historical landmarks created a dynamic atmosphere that filled me with excitement and anticipation for the cultural journey ahead.

I was fortunate to secure on-campus accommodation at Tsinghua, which proved to be a crucial part of my experience. The dormitories were well-maintained, offering essential amenities such as a private shower and bathroom. Living on campus allowed me to fully immerse myself in student life, fostering friendships and enabling easy access to university facilities and resources.

The orientation at Tsinghua was thorough and well designed. It covered pretty much everything from academic expectations and course registration to cultural insights and campus tours. This orientation was very helpful for me transitioning into student life at tsinghua and preparing me for all the challenges ahead.

Academically, Tsinghua University was also great. The courses were rigorous and intellectually stimulating, with a practical approach that emphasised application. The professors were also very highly knowledgeable and provided valuable insights into their respective fields and there were generally no language barriers.

Beyond academics, Beijing offered a wealth of experiences. The city’s ancient charm intertwined seamlessly with modern amenities, offering endless opportunities for cultural exploration and travel throughout China. From visiting historical sites like the Great Wall and the Forbidden City to exploring the modern malls and vibrant neighborhoods, everyday brought new discoveries and enriching experiences.

Financially, Beijing was more affordable than Auckland, especially in terms of daily expenses like food, transportation, and accommodation. On-campus dining options were diverse and budget-friendly, with over 10 canteens offering a variety of cuisines. Food delivery services were also incredibly convenient, delivering meals right to my dormitory building at reasonable prices.

For future students considering the exchange programme at Tsinghua University, I offer the following advice: embrace cultural differences with an open mind, plan ahead to maximize academic and personal growth opportunities, engage actively with both local and international peers to broaden your perspectives, and explore Beijing and China to fully appreciate their rich history and dynamic culture.

My exchange experience at Tsinghua University was transformative, offering not only academic growth but also personal development through cultural immersion and exploration. It was a journey that expanded my worldview and left me with cherished memories and lifelong friendships.
