My Exchange at Seoul National University
My name is Gina, and I am completing my 360 international exchange program at Seoul National University (SNU) in Seoul, South Korea.
I learned about the 360 International exchange program through word of mouth, but participating in an exchange program at Seoul National University has been a long-held dream of mine. As someone who has been planning since intermediate school, I perceived this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to prove an unforgettable experience that will help me gain the courage to grow as an individual whilst bettering my knowledge in my current field of study in a foreign nation.
I was ecstatic when I arrived in Seoul in late February. I felt excited to explore a new environment, meet new people, and experience Korean culture. Still, on the other hand, I felt nervous as I was entering a new environment, and I had to get used to new customs and daily routines.
All the exchange students attended the Welcoming Orientation Event on the 28th of February. We were given a detailed introduction to SNU’s history and some information on getting through the semester. We were also introduced to the SNU Buddy — a voluntary student organisation helping international students adapt to Korea. The event was fantastic because I immediately made new friends who sat close to me.
Life on campus at SNU is vibrant, diverse and dynamic. As the top university in Korea, SNU offers various academic and extracurricular activities, including several tennis clubs, an orchestra, a photography club and volunteer opportunities. In terms of class, I am taking two English courses (for Global Studies) and three Korean courses (for Music). All my courses are conducted in a small-lecture-based format, and there are usually many discussions.
I advise students considering going on exchange to research the host university you intend to attend (the location, culture, academic programs offered etc.) and ensure that the program aligns with your educational and personal goals. I also advise you to be open-minded and embrace every experience you are offered: exchange programs provide a unique opportunity to challenge your assumptions and biases. Embrace the experiences, take risks and make the most of every moment!

Some popular destinations include the cities of Busan and Jeju Island, as well as cultural sites like Gyeongbokgung Palace and Gwangjang Market.
How much did you budget for your exchange? Was this enough? Were there any lessons learned that would help future students budget for their own exchange?
My budget was around 1,500,000-2,500,000 KRW monthly (not including my program fees). This estimate may vary depending on one’s personal spending habits. So far, this is enough!
What are your most significant takeaways from your experience abroad?
Studying abroad in Korea can be an enriching and rewarding experience that can provide you with many significant takeaways that can benefit you both personally and professionally. Korea has given me the opportunity to immerse myself in new culture, broaden my global perspectives, help me develop a better understanding of international relations and global issues, and challenge myself both personally and academically. SNU has also given me the opportunity to network with professionals, scholars, and fellow students from different backgrounds, which in my opinion, will be beneficial for my future career opportunities.
