Sherrick Martin
Prime Minister’s Scholarship for Latin America, Indigenous Rights & Histories in Brazil
Introduction
Tēnā koutou katoa, Ko Sherrick Ashtrin Rangitakatu Martin tōku ingoa. He uri tēnei nō, Tūhoe, Te Whakatōhea, Te Arawa, Ngāti Maniapoto. I am a creative movement artist, a University of Auckland Dance Studies Graduate, and a Current Masters’s Student. I specialise in Māori contemporary dance and dance theatre, street dance styles, commercial dance styles, modern contemporary dance, Haka theatre, and Pacific dance fusion.
I am a Te Ao Māori researcher exploring the realms of tikanga and matauranga Māori ritualistic centred practices; through pre-colonial and post-futuristic contexts. I currently work as a professional dancer and emerging independent choreographer, creative director, and producer, creating multimodal artistic dance work for community events, theatre shows, and festivals.
I applied for this program to learn and observe the similarities and differences between the indigenous people of Brazil and Tangata Māori, hoping to expand my indigenous knowledge that can contribute to the creative works I design. I am also interested in learning the history and knowledge Brazil holds as a culture, a people, and a nation. I want to engage in their traditional rituals, waiata, karakia and dances.
I’m excited to learn and make myself fully available for this experience. Mauri Ora!
