One Month in India: Courtrooms, Camels & Cricket

In just one week, I’ll be back in New Zealand. Time has flown by, and I can’t wait to share what I’ve been up to. Spoiler alert – it includes a visit to the High Court of Bombay, camel riding in Rajasthan, and watching my dad umpire an international cricket match. Let’s get into it…

VIPLA FOUNDATION: Sex Trafficking Research

My work at Vipla Foundation has been rewarding and eye-opening. I’ve been analysing 26 sex trafficking cases from Maharashtra, identifying patterns in acquittals and pinpointing areas where prosecution can be strengthened. From raid procedures and medical examinations, to victim testimonies and witness reliability, every aspect plays a role in case outcomes. Gaining insight into how human trafficking cases unfold in India has been invaluable.

Beyond research, I attended Vipla Foundation’s Annual Day, where children from one of Vipla’s schools performed cultural dances in front of their families, friends, and teachers. It was yet another beautiful way to experience India’s rich culture.

A highlight of my internship has been visiting the Bombay High Court. The historic structure built in 1862, was an overwhelming maze of lawyers donning black-and-white robes, towering stacks of files, and endless courtrooms. I had the privilege of attending a meeting between my supervisor and an Hon’ble Judge discussing sex trafficking prevention initiatives. At the end of the meeting, I entered one of the courtrooms to observe civil proceedings. Although language barriers meant that I couldn’t understand the substance of the case, witnessing the Indian judicial system was insightful nonetheless, and yet another once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

TRAVELS

Rajasthan

One of my most memorable trips was to Jaisalmer, Rajasthan – also called “The Golden City.” This adventure-packed weekend started with a warm welcome at Hotel Nachana Haveli, complete with drum beats and flower petals. We wasted no time exploring the fort, admiring intricate temple carvings, and browsing colorful textiles and silver jewelry. After a jam-packed day, we were welcomed back to our hotel with a rooftop dinner overlooking the fort as we chatted around the fire.

The following days were filled with unforgettable experiences; sunrise coffees overlooking Jaisalmer, paddle-boating on the lake, camel riding, having high tea in the sand dunes, and watching a dancer balance fire on her head. Photos won’t do this place justice; you’ll have to visit Rajasthan for yourself!

Cuttack

If you thought Rajasthan was incredible, just wait until I share with you my experience in Cuttack! It’s not every day your dad is in India at the same time as you – let alone umpiring an international cricket match! So it goes without saying that I jumped at the chance to fly to Cuttack and watch the 2nd ODI between England and India.

The excitement started well before we even arrived at Barabati Stadium. The day kicked off with me meeting the one and only Brendon McCullum…yes, you read that right! I then travelled with my dad and his fellow umpires. We left our hotel alongside the Indian and English players in shuttles, escorted by police cars as the entire 45 minute drive was blocked from the public. Crowds lined the streets and bridges, cheering as the teams drove past, eager to catch a glimpse of the cricketers!

Over 45,000 fans packed inside the stadium, clapping, stamping, and erupting in chants of “King Kohli!” India secured a 4-wicket victory against England, guaranteeing a series win. The crowd went wild, accompanied by fireworks lighting up the night sky. India sure knows how to celebrate!

As I left the stadium alongside the umpires, we were swarmed by fans eager to secure a photo with the match officials – something I never expected. I was enjoying trying to avoid the mayhem, laughing as my camera-shy dad was dragged into selfies. However, it was only a matter of seconds until I, too, was brought into the photos. Cricket has a next-level status in India, and it was an absolute privilege to witness this firsthand.

THE COUNTDOWN

This internship has been a whirlwind of learning curves, challenges, travels, and cultural experiences. You bet I’ll be cramming as much as possible of all that India has to offer in these last seven days. I’ll catch you in the next (and final) blog!
