My Exchange at The University of Sydney
I am so glad that I took the opportunity to go on an exchange. I had some of the best times of my life, learned more about myself and met so many interesting people from all over the world. Sydney is such an incredible city, and this exchange confirmed that I want to live there in the future. The courses at my host university (USyd) were such a change from the ones I was taking at UoA, and I really appreciated that.
Over the duration of the exchange, I got to do many trips, both alone and with friends. The cost of living was more expensive, forcing me to get a job while I was there. This was a positive as I got more experience, obtained several new qualifications and expanded my social circle. It took a lot of stress off having a steady income, meaning that I could spend money and enjoy myself more whilst I was there.
The highlight of my exchange was the beaches; I thought you couldn’t beat New Zealand beaches, but the ones in Sydney were unbelievable. Just a bus ride away and you’re in paradise. This leads to the biggest challenge of my exchange – leaving. I really did not want to leave, I wanted to stay forever! Though that’s also what made it so special, the fact that it was a 6 month adventure, I can enjoy and appreciate it for what it is.
Initially I thought Sydney would be too similar to Auckland, and although they do share some aspects, it did feel new to me, and they have different cultures. I really enjoyed learning about Aboriginal culture, it is very beautiful and unique. I would strongly recommend anyone to go on exchange, it is such a special experience and I think everyone should do it.
Q&A
What were some of the highlights of the academic experience at your host university?
The teachers were really engaging, and I felt like I could discuss anything with them.
Would you recommend any particular activity/activities unique to your host country or university?
Become a USU member and go to the events!
What are your top 3 tips for future students attending your host university or going on exchange to your host country?
I would recommend getting a part-time job, potentially look into shared housing accommodation rather than halls, and go to the beach whenever you can.
How much did you budget for your exchange? Was this enough? Were there any lessons learned that would help future students budget for their own exchange?
I was definitely spending more than I was earning, so I would suggest having enough money to fall back on and not stress about spending.
What are your most significant takeaways from your experience abroad?
I definitely feel more self-assured and confident, learnt to enjoy my own company and explore a new city and make friends by myself, not knowing anyone.
