Exploring Singapore: A City of Endless Discoveries

Before arriving in Singapore for my exchange at NUS, I had the impression that it was a small, ultra-modern city—efficient, clean, and perhaps a little predictable. But once I started exploring beyond the famous landmarks, I realized how much depth and variety this city truly had. Every neighborhood told a different story, and every weekend felt like an adventure.

One of the first places I fell in love with was Tiong Bahru. Unlike the towering skyscrapers of Marina Bay, this neighborhood had a charming mix of old and new—quaint bookstores, hipster cafés, and beautiful pre-war shophouses. It was the perfect place to slow down, grab a coffee, and soak in the atmosphere. Another favorite spot was Haji Lane in Kampong Glam. The vibrant street art, quirky boutiques, and Middle Eastern restaurants made it feel completely different from anywhere else in the city.

Of course, no exploration of Singapore would be complete without visiting Gardens by the Bay. Even though it’s one of the city’s most famous attractions, it never failed to impress me. Seeing the Supertrees light up at night felt like stepping into a futuristic world. On the other end of the spectrum, I also loved spending time in Pulau Ubin, a small island that felt like a glimpse into old Singapore. Renting a bike and cycling through its lush greenery was a refreshing escape from the city’s fast-paced energy.

One of the best things about exploring Singapore was how easy it was to get around. The MRT system is incredibly efficient, and with an EZ-Link card, I could hop from one place to another effortlessly. Unlike in Auckland, where getting anywhere without a car can be tricky, Singapore’s public transport made it easy to explore every corner of the city.

For future exchange students, my advice is: don’t just stick to tourist spots—go beyond and discover the local side of Singapore. Explore different hawker centers, visit the hidden neighborhoods, and say yes to spontaneous adventures. This city has so much more to offer than meets the eye, and you never know what incredible experience is waiting just around the corner.
