Ka kite & ngā mihi Mumbai

That’s a wrap on our internships and time in Mumbai, India. The last two weeks of the trip were hectic and full of experience. Knowing we only had two more weeks in the country, we all scrambled to fit as many things into the last 14 days as possible.

I was nearing the end of my internship, and at that point, I wished I could stay and keep interning full-time. I was absolutely loving the mental health research component of my job. I got to continue connecting with the local sex workers within the Malad community and ask them about what mental health resources they have access to and what they think they need more of. My favourite part of the job is connecting with the youth, and before I left Mumbai, I knew I wanted to go and do more site visits to see the local children in Malad. I mentioned in my last blog that I was assisting with creating a documentary to educate people on sex work and managing the spread of HIV/AIDS. I continued to work on that alongside some local students from the university, and part of this work involved visiting more local children living in Mumbai.

Part of our cultural experience with Global Careers Centre was having a Bollywood dancing session. We, as a cohort, got to experience a prominent and famous part of the culture within India (not that I was any good). It was fun to try and jump outside of our comfort zones.

Of course, we had to do one last weekend trip outside of Mumbai before we went home. We all flew to New Delhi on the 14th of February to spend our last weekend together. It was important for us as a cohort to explore outside of Mumbai, and I am so glad we did this and would recommend it to future cohorts because there is so much more to India.

What an experience this trip was. I am still extremely grateful and always will be for the growth gained and the connections and relationships formed.
