Finding Home at Urja Trust

After five weeks in Mumbai and three blog posts, I’ve realised that I have yet to share any details about the exciting work I’ve been doing here. My time in this city has been shaped not only by its vibrant culture and buzzing streets but also by my internship at Urja Trust—a remarkable organisation dedicated to supporting homeless young women in Mumbai.

Urja Trust provides shelter, security, and rehabilitative care to survivors of family and sexual violence. They operate two shelters where women find safety, stability, and the resources to rebuild their lives. But beyond just offering a place to stay, Urja works holistically, addressing the legal, psychological, and social challenges these women face.

During my time at Urja, I have had the privilege of gaining a deep, first-hand understanding of how such an organisation functions. I have worked with the legal team, supporting efforts to help the women navigate their rights and access justice. I’ve observed the mental health team, learning about the counselling and therapy services that are crucial in aiding recovery. I’ve assisted the administrative caseworkers, whose tireless behind-the-scenes efforts keep the entire operation running. Each day has provided a new lesson in resilience, advocacy, and the power of collective action.

My walk to the office!

While the work itself has been fulfilling, the most profound takeaway from my experience at Urja has been the relationships I’ve formed. The office is a small but mighty space, run by a group of dedicated, compassionate, and fiercely intelligent wahine who work relentlessly to make a difference. Their passion is infectious, and their commitment to the cause is truly inspiring. In the short time I’ve been here, they have welcomed me into their world with open arms, making me feel like a valued part of their mission.

One of my favourite moments each day is our communal lunch. We gather in a circle on the floor, sharing a meal prepared by Geeta, the office assistant, whose culinary skills are unmatched. Though my Hindi is still limited, the warmth in our conversations, the shared laughter, and the exchange of stories transcend language barriers. It’s in these simple yet profound moments that I feel the deepest connection to the people around me. Check out some of the lunch highlights from my time here, Geeta’s masala chai is the best thing I have ever tasted!

My experience at Urja has been nothing short of transformative. It has challenged me, taught me, and given me a new perspective on resilience and community. As my time in Mumbai is coming to a close, I look forward to learning even more and carrying these lessons and relationships with me long after I leave.
