An Expectation Exceeded

One of few quiet streets in Mumbai’s South.

It would be dishonest to suggest that my expectations of Mumbai were entirely positive. Conversations prior to my departure had instilled me with greater caution than optimism. It has taken but a week for that caution to be replaced with awe and a true appreciation of the city in which I find myself.

What could not have been expected was my treatment at the university at which I am researching. Following a rigorous conversation with my research supervisors, I was taken to my office. I was at a complete loss as I walked in to see spectacular views overlooking the city, as well as the bubble wrap being removed from brand new office furniture. I was subject to endless attention to ensure that I was set up ‘just right’. To suggest that I felt cared for would be a blatant understatement.

Upon arrival, one is most immediately confronted with the chaos and noise of traffic. However, as with much else in this frenetic city, there is a certain ‘order’ which is revealed upon closer inspection. The sheer volume of people leaves little room for the conveniences and niceties enjoyed back home. Life here simply moves faster.

Not all of the city is as charming as my new workspace. The poverty is as bad as expected. Most confronting was the begging of children so young that they ought to be subject to unwavering full-time care. Instead, memories of their childhood will be filled with the train carriages they hop between, ensuring that no stranger is missed. When confronted with such scenes, one cannot help but feel an overwhelming sense of one’s own privilege.

Food was yet another matter in which a deep caution had been instilled in me, owing to the commentary of those I’d told about the trip. This, however, has become one of the most positive points of the trip so far. Provided street food is avoided, one is at liberty to enjoy the flavour sensations which characterise Indian food. Our food back home is truly put to shame. This is clearly a culture which cares deeply for and puts a significant amount of effort into its meals.

I approach the second work week filled with optimism as to the endless exploratory possibilities. Now that my caution has been tempered, I feel ideally poised to enjoy all that is offered to me. Excited anticipation fills my thoughts concerning the times ahead.
