I first learned about this incredible opportunity through an email notification, which immediately piqued the interest of both myself and my brother. As someone who aims for a career in the medical field, immersing myself in diverse cultures has always been of importance. This, coupled with a long-standing fascination with Japan’s rich cultural tapestry encompassing language, cuisine, and traditions, compelled me to apply. While my knowledge of Seoul and South Korea was relatively limited beforehand, the prospect of exploring these regions excited me with the promise of new discoveries and experiences. Fortunately, both my brother and I were accepted for the program, embarking on this remarkable journey together.
Anticipation ran high as I prepared for this experience, with expectations soaring. Even still, the experience itself not only met but surpassed each and every expectation, no matter how large they initially seemed. In Seoul, our itinerary brimmed with captivating activities, from immersive tours of the city to enlightening visits to iconic sites like HiKR Ground and KBS ON. Engaging lectures shed light on the intricacies of Korean pop culture and the profound influence of certain policies on media and society, fostering a deeper understanding of the cultural landscape. Transitioning to Japan, our exploration continued with stays in Osaka and Tokyo, punctuated by a memorable day trip to Kyoto. Each moment was a testament to Japan’s vibrant heritage and modern-day allure. From the tranquillity of Osaka Castle to the whimsical charm of Studio Ghibli Museum and the awe-inspiring energy of RED TOKYO TOWER e-sport park, every experience left a permanent mark on my journey.
Throughout the program, the support and guidance of our trip coordinators were invaluable, ensuring seamless transitions between activities and maximizing our cultural immersion. The accommodations provided were exceptional, offering not only comfort but also complimentary breakfasts that fueled our daily adventures. Reflecting on this enriching experience, I’ve forged enduring connections with fellow travellers and locals alike, expanding my worldview and deepening my appreciation for cultural diversity. To aspiring participants, my advice is simple: seize this opportunity to apply without hesitation. The insights gained and memories created are invaluable, transcending mere travel to foster personal growth and cross-cultural understanding. Namely, this journey has been nothing short of transformative, leaving a perpetual imprint on my perspective and igniting a desire to explore the world further.
Were you satisfied with the cross-cultural experiences that this programme provided?
The program’s cross-cultural experiences far exceeded my expectations, offering immersive insights into Korean and Japanese cultures. Donning Hanbok in Korea and Kimono in Japan, we explored historical sites and participated in traditional tea ceremonies, unveiling the rich tapestry of each country’s heritage. Interactions with locals and program coordinators sparked enlightening discussions on cultural intricacies, fostering mutual understanding and respect. These encounters not only deepened my appreciation for Korean and Japanese traditions but also broadened my global perspective. Engaging with diverse customs and viewpoints inspired a profound sense of curiosity and empathy, prompting me to embrace cultural diversity with open arms. Overall, the program’s emphasis on cross-cultural immersion has left a meaningful mark on my journey, igniting a lifelong commitment to intercultural exchange and fostering meaningful connections across borders.
What skills do you think this experience helped you gain, and how so? How might this differ from the experience you could otherwise gain in New Zealand?
During this trip, I acquired invaluable skills primarily due to the differences in culture and language barriers. I learned basic Korean phrases and expanded my already somewhat developed Japanese vocabulary. In Japan, I challenged myself to learn at an accelerated pace, particularly when navigating off-itinerary locations without translation assistance. This experiential learning was significantly different from what I could gain in New Zealand, where English is widely spoken. The immersion in a foreign environment challenged me to communicate effectively, think critically, and problem-solve independently—skills that are integral to cross-cultural competence and adaptability. This experience served as a catalyst for personal growth, equipping me with the resilience and resourcefulness needed to thrive in diverse settings beyond familiar borders.
