And just like that, my time in India has come to an end!
I am now back in Auckland, writing this blog with the sensations of a Kiwi summer around me; I can hear the chorus of cicadas and native birds, see the lush green grass, and smell the fresh air. It’s good to be home!
Being back in New Zealand this past week has afforded me a period of much-needed rest and relaxation, but also space for reflection.
My time in India has been life-changing! I’ve met a diverse range of Indian people in diverse settings; homes, schools, start-ups, and places of worship. Wherever we went, they welcomed us with open arms, making me feel honoured to experience the genuine spirit of Indian hospitality or ‘Atithi Devo Bhava’ – the guest is god. Admittedly, the trip also presented its share of hurdles. There have been moments of discomfort, contradictions, and cultural disjunctures. Yet these instances became catalysts for introspection and a shedding of preconceptions.
The IndoGenius team, along with my 20 fellow Kiwis, became my family far from home. Together, we discovered the many layers of India, each revealing new lessons in love, diversity, spirituality, love and service. The students, NGO leaders, and business visionaries we met illustrated the spectrum of Indian life, one that is brimming with vibrancy and hope. The country’s future, I am certain, will continue to unfold in surprising and inspiring ways.
Returning to New Zealand, I’ve also found a newfound gratitude for the simple comforts I once took for granted, like silence and fresh air. Yet, I equally miss the people I met and the lessons I learnt in India. India was not simply a destination, but an educator in life’s journey.
In this regard, the main takeaway from my journey is a renewed perspective. A re-evaluation (or affirmation) of my perspective on New Zealand, India, my aspirations, and my mindset. This journey was not just about discovering a new country, but also about rediscovering myself. What do I really value, how can I contribute, and what do I hope to achieve?
My time in India has further cemented the value of international experience. I strongly encourage those curious about India or the program to embrace the opportunity. Take the leap and immerse yourself in a country like no other. Your time in India will transform your thinking, challenge your preconceptions, and enrich your life in ways I could not have anticipated six weeks ago.
Finally, I want to express my immense gratitude to the Indo Genius team, Education New Zealand, and the University of Auckland for making this
unforgettable adventure possible. This chapter of my life, rich with learning and discovery, will be cherished and reflected upon for years to come.
Now, amidst the comfort of the familiar, I sense a part of my spirit will remain lingering in India; a place that has imparted to me the truest sense of diversity, compassion, and human connection.
So until we meet again India, thank you.
