Embarking on my six-week journey across India, I’ve been here for a week now, absorbing the rich culture and diverse traditions. I’ve learned that India welcomes visitors with open arms, showcases immense dedication through hard work, harbors big aspirations, and contributes to global betterment through various innovations. The spiritual essence of the country has also become evident; I wasn’t aware of quite how devoted India was to their spiritual beliefs. It has truly been an eye opening experience that I am thankful to be able to immerse myself in.
Throughout my time in India, I anticipate continued opportunities that will shape my personal and cultural growth. These insights will undoubtedly influence my self-discovery goals and contribute to my broader global perspective.
As I navigate the country, I am mindful of the invaluable life lessons that will impact my worldview and future personal and professional self. This experience will enhance my adaptability, resilience, and ability to engage with those from diverse cultures and with diverse beliefs and worldviews, preparing me for future challenges in my social work career.
Upon my return, sharing this adventure with my whānau and friends will add deeper significance to the stories and memories created abroad. I believe my reflections will also influence their perspectives on India. I also plan to potentially write an insightful book on my experiences travelling, which I hope will further help shape New Zealanders perspectives of India. Guided by my Māori identity and personal tikanga, I approach and will continue to approach interactions in India with respect, embracing their own tikanga and ways of doing, and fostering connections through the principles of manaakitanga and aroha. I will also be open to sharing about my own culture and life in New Zealand for those who show interest.
These interactions will help to strengthen not only my own understanding of India, but the mutual understanding and relationships between Aotearoa New Zealand and India. To introduce our country to India, I want to share as much information about our rich history, stunning landscapes, and the warmth of our people as I can. I will be open and honest when asked questions by locals about Aotearoa New Zealand and be open-minded about any responses I may receive. Through storytelling, I hope to foster increased understanding and appreciation. In summary, for me, this journey across India is a holistic exploration—of self, career, culture, and the world. It is also an opportunity to showcase Aotearoa New Zealand and increase India’s understanding of our beautiful country.
I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to do this, to represent Aotearoa New Zealand, and I am excited about the transformative power of this adventure. I look forward to seeing how my perspectives change as the weeks go by!
